Navicular Disease

The navicular bone is located behind the coffin joint and acts as a fulcrum for the deep digital flexor tendon to flex the coffin joint. An extreme amount of stress on this bone can lead to inflammation, bone remodeling, adjacent soft tissue strain, and ultimately pain. Navicular pain is one of the most common causes of lameness in horses.
