Squamous Cell Carcinoma

The nictitans or third eyelid is a structure that helps protect and lubricate the surface of the eye. It is covered in a pink mucous membrane that occasionally develops a tumor called a squamous cell carcinoma. These begin as a benign tumor, but can invade tissue locally.
